How to Make a Transparent PNG from a Photo
Create a reusable cutout, choose the right format, and check that your downloaded image is really transparent.
When a transparent PNG is the right file
A transparent image lets a subject sit over a different design without a rectangular background. It is useful for presentation slides, product collages and profile artwork. Transparency is stored as an alpha channel in the file. A white background is still opaque, even if it looks empty on a white screen.
Make the cutout in five steps
- Open Background Remover and use click to choose, drop a file, or paste an image. Start with a sharp photo and a clear separation between the subject and its surroundings.
- Wait for processing. First use downloads the standard AI model, about 44 MB, before it can run. Your source image stays on your device; the model download is separate from your photo.
- Choose Result to inspect the cutout, then Compare to check it against the original. Look at hair, holes between objects, and thin details rather than judging only the center of the subject.
- Under Background, select Transparent. Under Export size, select Original size unless your design requires another canvas. Check Final size before downloading.
- Select Download PNG. Place the downloaded file over a dark or colored background in your design app. This reveals pale halos and confirms that the checkerboard in the preview was showing transparency, not a printed pattern.
Choose dimensions for your design
Use PNG for reusable transparent assets. If you choose Download JPG with a transparent background selected, the tool flattens the image onto white. That is suitable for an opaque photo, but changing its filename to .png cannot restore transparency.
Original-size export keeps the source pixel dimensions; it does not recreate detail missing from a blurry input. Free canvas choices include 1:1 at 1080 × 1080, 4:5 at 1080 × 1350, 9:16 at 1080 × 1920, 16:9 at 1920 × 1080, and Custom. They fit the entire source image inside the canvas without stretching or cropping. Extra space stays transparent when Transparent is selected.
What to do when an edge looks wrong
AI can remove part of the subject or leave background fragments, especially around glass, fine hair and low-contrast edges. Glimbench has no manual erase or restore brush. Try a better source photo, or finish difficult edges in a masking editor. Pro offers a High-quality model only on devices that pass the tool’s WebGPU capability check; it does not guarantee a perfect cutout.
Free allows five images per batch and 25 MB per file; single-image use is unlimited. Large pixel dimensions can still exhaust memory below that file limit. If processing fails on a phone, try a smaller copy or a computer, then inspect the downloaded PNG again.
